Metformin Treatment Lab Panel
All patients who want to be administered Metformin, a medicine used to treat Type II Diabetes and regulate blood sugar, must have the tests included in our Metformin Treatment Lab Panel. This panel includes CMP, CBC, A1C, Fasting Insulin, and Vitamin B-12.
Metformin has been proven to aid in the improvement of insulin sensitivity, endothelial dysfunction, liver function, cardiovascular protection, cholesterol management, weight loss, and inflammation reduction in patients with Type 2 diabetes. All patients who want to be administered Metformin, a medicine used to treat Type II Diabetes and regulate blood sugar, must have the tests included in our Metformin Treatment Lab Panel. The following is a breakdown of each test in this panel:
Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP-14) - Examines 14 different blood tests and can be used as an initial medical screening tool to assess general health. These 14 tests include bilirubin, total; BUN; BUN: creatinine ratio; calcium serum; carbon dioxide, total; chloride, serum; creatinine serum; eGFR calculation; globulin, total; glucose, serum; potassium, serum; protein, total, serum; and sodium, serum. This test measures renal function, liver function, electrolyte balance, and fluid balance.
Complete Blood Count (CBC) - One of the most popular tests requested for routine checkups and physical examinations. The numbers of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, hemoglobin, hematocrit, absolute lymphocytes, monocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, and other blood indicators for immunological health are measured in this test. The test can be used to help diagnose and treat a wide range of different illnesses.
Hemoglobin A1C - Used to assess glucose levels in the bloodstream for 2-3 months before the test. In diabetic management, this is critical to monitor. Scientists think maintaining normal blood sugar levels can help people with diabetes avoid many associated dangers and adverse effects. This test offers information on overall glycemic health over a few months. Hemoglobin is a protein that is found in red blood cells. When glucose levels rise, sugar starts to combine with hemoglobin. It takes the body 8-12 weeks to restore normal hemoglobin A1c levels. As a result, elevated hemoglobin A1c values generally indicate a high amount of glucose in the blood over the previous 2-3 months.
Insulin (Fasting) - This test measures the quantity of insulin, the hormone that transfers glucose into the body's cells: the body's primary energy source is glucose, a sugar derived from meals. Our bodies convert the foods we consume into glucose and other nutrients, which are subsequently absorbed into the circulation via the GI tract. Following meals, glucose levels usually rise, causing the pancreas to produce insulin and release it into circulation. Insulin functions as a key, opening the doors to cells and allowing glucose to enter. Glucose cannot enter cells without insulin and hence remains in circulation. The body must maintain correct insulin and glucose levels to be healthy. When there is insufficient insulin, blood sugar drops (hypoglycemia), resulting in sweating, shaking, lightheadedness, and potentially shock. Diabetes is the most prevalent cause of erratic blood sugar swings.
Vitamin B12 is necessary for a healthy metabolism, energy, and stress management. Metformin can occasionally lower Vitamin B12 levels and, in severe situations, induce anemia if a patient is already deficient.
